21. Stalin’s Revenge

On 13 August, about a week after the Soviet guns on the other side of the river fell silent, any hopes we held that this was just a temporary blip, were dispelled by a communiqué released by the official Soviet news agency TASS, quoted in the Biuletyn Informacyjny, which refuted concerns raised by London’s Polish government-in-exile that the Red Army had abandoned us to our fate. It read:

TASS has been authorized to say that such foreign press reports are either a misunderstanding or an insult against the Soviet High Command. TASS has been informed that the Polish émigré circles responsible for the Uprising did not try to coordinate their action with the Soviet High Command. Polish émigré circles in London must bear the responsibility for these latest events in Warsaw.
